Check it before you print
The barcode is one of the smallest costs in a product launch, and one of the few that can stop a sale. A duplicate number, an image printed too small, or a symbol a scanner rejects all mean a reprint, which costs many times more than the barcode did.
Send us your packaging artwork before it goes to print, and we’ll confirm the barcode is correct, the right size and readable. Barcode artwork test. If a retailer asks for formal proof, we can also arrange a verification report on your printed packaging.
If a retailer questions your number
Occasionally a retailer looks up a barcode, finds nothing in GS1’s database, and asks you to prove the number is legitimate.
Free registration on the International Barcodes Database is how you answer that: it’s a public record showing the number belongs to you and your product. It also means a customer searching for your product online or scanning it with a phone app finds your company, not a blank. Registration is optional, and free either way.
Common questions
Do they work in Ireland and worldwide? Yes. We issued our numbers through the Uniform Code Council (now GS1 US) before August 2002, when numbers were sold outright rather than licensed annually. Standard retail scanners read them worldwide. Barcode acceptance in Ireland.
Why don’t they start with 539? Because the first digits show where the number was issued, not where the product was made. Only numbers licensed from GS1 Ireland start with 539. More on country codes.
Any renewal fees? None. One payment, and the number is yours permanently.
EAN or UPC? Both are included. It’s the same number in two formats. Irish and European retailers use EAN-13, and UPC-A covers North America.
Why not a cheaper reseller? The price reflects what’s included: the pre-sale check, both formats, artwork, a guarantee certificate and free registration. Wherever you buy, check two things first: has the number been verified as unused, and can you find out who’s selling it to you?
